Wash Common Recreation Ground

Walk onto Wash Common and you're immediately struck by how much space there is - proper open grassland that feels genuinely wild despite being right on Newbury's doorstep. It's a nature reserve that gets on with the job without making a fuss about it, which is exactly what you want from a local spot.

The ground itself is largely unmanaged meadow, which means it's brilliant for wildflowers in spring and early summer. Butterflies everywhere if you time it right. There are footpaths threading through, nothing strenuous, so it works for families with younger kids who want to burn energy without a proper hike. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile too - nothing rare, but the variety keeps things interesting across the seasons.

The reality is this isn't a destination in itself. You're not driving an hour to see it. But if you're staying at Hollington Park Glamping just up the road, it's an excellent way to spend an hour or so before lunch, or to take the dog for a proper walk that doesn't involve pavements. The common's free to access and there's no set visiting hours - it's one of those places where you just turn up.

Best visited between May and September when the wildflower display is on and the weather's cooperative. Bring binoculars if you're into birds. Wear decent shoes - it can get boggy after rain. It's the sort of place that reminds you why people move to Hampshire.
