Warrens (Pillow Mounds)

Drive south of South Brent and you'll stumble across one of Devon's least-known Anglo-Saxon burial grounds. Warrens isn't dramatic - there's no visitor centre, no gift shop, just a cluster of grassy mounds rising from open moorland. What you're looking at are pillow mounds, those strange oblong bumps that pepper medieval rabbit warrens across Britain. Locals bred rabbits in them centuries ago, but these particular mounds have older bones buried beneath.

It's the kind of place that appeals to history enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys reading a landscape properly - you need to know what you're looking at to find it genuinely compelling. The mounds themselves are modest, nothing towering, but standing among them you get a real sense of how people used this moorland for survival and profit. Walkers heading out from South Brent will find it a reasonable detour, though it's not a destination that'll keep you occupied for hours. Twenty minutes to half an hour is realistic.

Free to visit, no restrictions that I'm aware of, and there's proper moorland walking nearby if you've got the energy. If you're staying at Ashbourne Woods just down the road, it's worth a morning ramble - the kind of thing that makes a rural holiday feel properly exploratory rather than just ticking boxes. Weather-dependent, mind you. In rain it's just muddy mounds.
