Warren Top

The walk up Warren Top, just outside Knaresborough, rewards you with proper views across the Nidd Valley. It's not a dramatic peak - more a modest hill that locals have clearly been tramping up for years - but the vantage point makes it worth the leg work.

You get a real sense of the North Yorkshire landscape from the top: green fields rolling away, patches of woodland, and on a clear day the moorland beyond. The walk itself takes about forty minutes from Knaresborough, depending on your pace and which route you take. There's no single marked trail, which means it feels pleasantly untamed rather than over-tramped.

Families with older kids will manage it fine; it's steep in stretches but nothing technical. Younger children might lose patience before the summit. Walkers doing a longer loop - perhaps incorporating the riverside paths near Knaresborough itself - will find Warren Top a natural waypoint rather than a destination in its own right.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks round here - Rudding Holiday Park or Harrogate Caravan Park are both within four miles - it's a cracking spot for a midweek morning. Free, obviously. No facilities at the top, so bring water. Best avoided on rainy days when the ground gets boggy. Go for the views and the walk itself, not expecting anything you'd find in the Lake District. It's honest, accessible North Yorkshire countryside.
