Warren Hill doesn't announce itself. You crest the slope near Salisbury and suddenly the Wiltshire landscape spreads out before you in all directions - chalk downland rolling towards the horizon, the cathedral spire visible on clear days off to the south. It's the sort of walk that locals do without thinking twice, but visitors often miss it entirely.

The summit itself is modest in stature - this isn't dramatic terrain - but that's rather the point. You're standing at a genuine high point on the Salisbury Plain, and the 360-degree views justify the modest climb. On a decent day you can pick out features for miles across the downland. The path up is straightforward enough, though your legs will know you've done it if you're not a regular walker.

This works best for people who actually enjoy walking rather than just ticking off viewpoints. If your idea of a peak is a car park and a ten-minute stroll, look elsewhere. But if you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Green Hill Farm is barely two miles away - and you want to stretch your legs properly with decent scenery as reward, Warren Hill delivers. Allow an hour for a proper walk up and back, longer if you fancy sitting at the top with a flask.

It's free and you'll rarely be crowded, which beats fighting your way up busier spots. Winter can be bleak up here; spring and early summer are when it really shows its worth. Pair it with exploring Salisbury's cathedral or the neolithic sites scattered across the plain - you're in proper ancient Britain territory.
