Warden Great Wood

Warden Great Wood is a commercial operation run by the Forestry Commission, which means it's less manicured than your typical country park and all the better for it.

The main draw is straightforward: walking. You can spend anywhere from an hour pottering about near the entrance to half a day exploring the deeper tracks if you've got the legs for it. The mix of coniferous and broadleaf woodland feels proper ancient in places, though it's actively harvested for timber. That's either a turn-off or oddly honest, depending on your view of these things.

Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after a while - there's no play area or visitors' centre, just woodland and paths. But for anyone who likes a solid forest walk without the crowds or the heritage plaque tourism, it's absolutely worth the drive from Henlow. Bring proper boots; it can get boggy. Autumn's best when the whole place smells of damp earth and old wood.
