War Down

War Down sits just north of Petersfield, a modest chalk hill that gives proper views across the South Downs if you catch it on a clear day. The walk up takes about twenty minutes from the nearest car park - nothing steep, but the path can be muddy after rain so decent shoes are essential. Once you're at the summit, you get sight lines stretching toward the Weald, which justifies the effort. It's the kind of spot where you'll see a handful of other walkers and maybe a paraglider or two if the wind's right.

For families with older kids, it's a decent half-hour outing - young children might find it a bit dull unless they're the type who get excited about having conquered something. History types will appreciate the Iron Age fort remains if you know what you're looking at, though there's not much signage to guide you. Walkers using the South Downs Way often pass through here as part of a longer route.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Wallops Wood or Adhurst Yurts are both within five miles - War Down works as a morning walk before breakfast. Cedar Valley's closer still at under four miles, making it a straightforward alternative to a park activity on a decent weather day. Admission's free, and there's no formal opening hours to worry about. Just go when the light's good and the forecast promises dry ground.
