Wanstead Park

The lake dominates Wanstead Park the moment you arrive - proper sprawling water surrounded by mature trees that have been there long enough to know what they're doing. It's a 72-acre nature reserve in East London, though it barely feels like you're in the city once you're inside the gates. The walking routes are straightforward and well-marked, threading past woodland and open grassland with views back across the water at every turn.

You'll see waterfowl year-round - ducks, grebes, the occasional heron if you're patient - and the birdwatching can be genuinely rewarding during migration seasons. The park has proper facilities too: a visitor centre, refreshment stand, and plenty of benches if you just want to sit and watch. Kids don't typically get bored here because there's water to look at, paths to follow, and the odd surprise around corners. A couple of hours is the sweet spot for most visitors, though walkers could easily stretch it to half a day.

From Chingford it's a straightforward drive south, and if you're using Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park as your base near Edmonton, Wanstead makes an easy morning or afternoon excursion. It's free admission and costs you nothing but time - which is precisely why it works. Not flashy, but properly good for clearing your head and spotting wildlife without needing to drive an hour out of London.
