Wanlip Meadows

The Soar Valley delivers one of Leicestershire's quieter walks, and Wanlip Meadows is where you'll find yourself if you're willing to venture just outside Leicester proper. This stretch of riverside meadow sits along the River Soar - proper flat walking country, the kind where you won't need hiking boots but you might need wellies after rain.

It's a straightforward affair: water, grass, trees, and the sort of light that shifts across open fields. Local walkers use it as a gentle circuit, and birdwatchers do their thing along the water's edge. The meadows themselves aren't dramatic - they won't stop you in your tracks - but that's rather the point. You're here for breathing space, not spectacle.

Families with young children find it manageable since the walking is easy and there's enough space to let them run about without constant concern. The caravan parks scattered within five miles - Hill Top, Village Farm Getaway, and Reas Glamping at Zillahs Spinney - all make sensible bases if you're planning a Leicestershire break. Wanlip sits just northeast of Leicester itself, so it's accessible without a lengthy drive from any of those parks. Weather dependent, but spring through autumn works best.
