Walmer Castle

The coastal path from Deal drops you right at Walmer Castle's gatehouse, and you'll immediately spot what makes this place different from the usual castle experience. Built as a Tudor fortress in 1540, it's a low, star-shaped stronghold designed for cannon fire rather than arrows - all squat bastions and efficient geometry rather than dramatic towers. Inside, it's less fortress, more comfortable residence. The state rooms are genuinely lived-in feeling, with personal touches that make you realise this wasn't just a military post.

The main draw is the Queen Mother's connection - she was Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports for years and used the castle as a proper home. You'll see her sitting room, her bedroom, the things she actually cared about. It's oddly intimate for a castle. The gardens wrap around the outside and they're surprisingly lovely - the walls shelter everything beautifully, and on a clear day you're looking straight out toward France across the Channel.

History buffs will spend two hours easily. Kids will manage an hour, maybe 90 minutes if the gardens keep them entertained. It's not dramatic enough to hold younger children's attention for long. English Heritage runs it, so expect the usual admission charge and tea room. The location near Deal makes it a natural pairing with a coastal park holiday - Kingsdown Camping is less than two miles away, or you could base yourself at Sandwich Leisure if you want something slightly quieter. Spring and summer are best; winter winds off the Channel can be absolutely brutal.
