Wadholt Wood

Getting lost in Wadholt Wood feels like stepping outside Kent entirely. The forest sits just inland from Dover, dense enough to block out the seafront bustle, and offers a proper break from the coastal path shuffle. It's woodland walking at its most straightforward - trails wind through mature trees, the ground stays mostly firm underfoot, and there's something about the filtered light through the canopy that makes you slow down without meaning to.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination with a cafe or visitor centre - just trees, paths, and the occasional bench if you need a sit-down. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes, especially if they're after something with more structure or activities. But if you've got teenagers who can appreciate a decent woodland ramble, or you're after a quiet two-hour circuit to stretch your legs, it works well.

The nearest town is Dover, which means you're within easy reach while staying based at any of the local holiday parks - Hawthorn Farm is closest at under three miles, or go for Parkdean Resorts St Margaret's Bay if you want the camp facilities with quick access inland. Wadholt fits perfectly as a morning walk before heading to the seafront attractions, or a peaceful afternoon slot when you've had enough of the busier Dover attractions.

Allow two hours maximum. Best visited when it's not immediately after heavy rain - woodland mud round here can be sticky.
