Volunteer Park

A sprawling nature reserve just outside Hawick that feels properly removed from the everyday. Volunteer Park gives you proper walking country - rolling Scottish Borders landscape where you can spend a solid couple of hours if you've got the legs for it, or just an easy amble if you're taking it gentle.

The reserve itself is working land where conservation actually happens rather than just talking about it. You'll spot native woodland, open grassland, and if you're lucky, some of the birds and small mammals they've been working to protect. The paths are well-maintained without feeling over-engineered, which is exactly what you want. Some bits climb a fair bit - bring decent footwear - but nothing that would stop an average walker or older kids.

Real strength here is if you're someone who actually wants to see what habitat restoration looks like on the ground. It's not the dramatic stuff - no mountain vistas or dramatic waterfalls - but it's the kind of place that grows on you over an hour or two. Families with younger children might find it a bit long unless they're keen on spotting things and asking questions.
