Viridor Green

A proper working nature reserve just outside Taunton, Viridor Green is one of those places that sneaks up on you. It's part landfill restoration project, part wildlife haven - and yes, that combination actually works. What was once a waste site has been transformed into something genuinely worth visiting, with meadows, wetlands, and ponds that now attract all manner of birds and insects.

Walking the trails here feels less manicured than your typical country park. You'll spot lapwings, reed warblers if you time it right, and the sort of wildflowers that have learned to thrive in regenerated ground. The landscape is flat and open - classic Somerset Levels territory - so don't expect drama, but do expect peace and proper birding opportunities. Families with binoculars will get more out of it than young children after ten minutes of walking.

It's free to visit and works brilliantly as a half-morning stop if you're based at 5 Acres on the Somerset Levels, just down the road. Allow an hour or so to walk the main trails without rushing. Spring and early summer are best for birds and wildflowers. The site runs on volunteer energy, so facilities are basic - bring a packed lunch rather than expecting a cafe.

Not a day in itself, but a solid add-on to a Somerset holiday if you're into nature and restoration projects that actually succeed.
