The cave entrance at Viewpoint Pot is tucked away near Appin, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of exploring but won't keep you entertained for hours. You're looking at a proper geological feature - a natural cave opening with decent views across the surrounding landscape, which is why it's caught the attention of visitors over the years.

What actually happens when you visit depends entirely on your tolerance for narrow passages and muddy boots. The cave itself is modest in scale, nothing like the massive cathedral caverns you get elsewhere in Scotland, but there's something satisfying about squeezing through and emerging to better vistas. Most people will spend thirty minutes here, maybe forty-five if you're the type to sit around and take photographs.

Families with younger kids should think twice - it's not particularly child-friendly, and the approach can be boggy. Walkers and geology enthusiasts will get more from it, especially those doing the longer routes around Appin where this fits as a minor detour rather than a main event.

If you're based at Creagan Station Tourers just 3.4 miles away or Oban Camping and Caravanning Club Site a bit further out, Viewpoint Pot makes a decent half-day addition to your itinerary. Go in decent weather - it's considerably less appealing when it's wet. Free access, as far as anyone can tell, though facilities are nonexistent so bring water.
