Viewpoint

The viewpoint here sits above Kyle of Lochalsh, and on a clear day it's absolutely worth the short drive up from the town. You get proper Highland scenery - mountains rising across the water, the kind of vista that makes you understand why people get sentimental about this part of Scotland. The walk up is gentle enough, though the path can be boggy depending on recent weather.

It's the sort of spot that works brilliantly for photographers, and families won't find it tedious since the reward arrives quickly without needing to commit to a full afternoon trek. Allow maybe 45 minutes if you're taking your time with photos and soaking it in. There's something quite bracing about standing up there with the wind off the water and the islands stretched out in front of you.

The light changes constantly up here - go early and you might catch mist burning off the peaks, or wait for late afternoon when the sun swings round and catches the water differently. Skip it in heavy cloud though; you'll see precisely nothing and the wind can be sharp. Worth timing it right.
