Victoria Park

Victoria Park sits right on Leicester's doorstep, a proper urban nature reserve that punches above its weight. The lake is the main draw - it's genuinely lovely for a wander, especially if you've got binoculars and a bird book tucked under your arm. Herons, grebes, and the odd kingfisher if you're lucky and quiet enough.

The paths are well-maintained and flat, so it works for families with pushchairs or anyone who doesn't fancy a slog up a hill. There's enough to occupy you for a solid couple of hours, though you won't need all day. The woodland bits give you proper shade on warm days, and there are benches positioned where you'd actually want to sit.

Birders will get the most from it - spring and autumn migration seasons are when things get interesting. Casual walkers and families wanting somewhere local to stretch their legs will find it pleasant rather than spectacular. Kids might get restless if they're hoping for ice cream kiosks and playgrounds, though it's green and open enough for them to burn off energy.

Since it's run by the city council, admission is free and you can turn up whenever. It slots neatly into a caravan holiday at any of the nearby parks - Green Acres, Fox's Furrow, and Village Farm Getaway are all within six miles. Pair it with Bradgate Park for a proper day out with more dramatic scenery and history thrown in.
