The boating pond at Victoria Park is where Newbury locals come to watch the world slow down. It's a proper little body of water - nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful if you time it right and avoid the school holidays rush.

You can walk the perimeter easily enough, which takes maybe twenty minutes at a leisurely pace. The real point is to sit on one of the benches and watch the ducks potter about, or if you're lucky, catch sight of someone launching a model boat. It's the kind of place that works best when you're not expecting fireworks. Kids will have a look and want to move on within an hour, unless they're the type obsessed with feeding waterfowl - in which case bring bread alternatives because the ducks have heard about nutrition now.
