Victoria Basin sits on Gloucester's waterfront, a proper working dock that's been given a second life as a place to actually spend time rather than just pass through. The water mirrors the old warehouses and modern developments with equal indifference, and you'll find narrowboats moored alongside pleasure cruisers - a mix that tells you everything about how the Cotswold Canal revival has changed things here.

Walking the basin's edge takes twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you stop to watch the lock gates working or grab a coffee from one of the handful of cafes that have sprouted up. It's not dramatic - no Cornish cliffs or Lake District peaks - but there's something satisfying about the geometry of it all: the clean lines of the waterfront, the reflections, the general sense that something old is being made useful again.

This works best if you're already in Gloucester for the cathedral or the museums, or if you've got kids who need to burn off energy without the intensity of a proper nature walk. The Glamping Orchard, five miles out, makes a decent base if you want countryside with easy access to the city. Allow an hour here maximum unless you're the type to sit with a book and watch the boats.

Free to wander, though you'll spend money if you eat or drink. Go early morning or late afternoon when it's quieter - midday can feel a bit thin, all tourists and tour groups.
