Vertish Hill

Vertish Hill isn't much to look at on the map, but walk it and you'll understand why locals keep coming back. Rising just outside Hawick, it's a proper no-nonsense Borders hill with views that stretch across rolling moorland toward the Cheviot range. The ascent takes twenty minutes from the car park, maybe thirty if you're not in a rush, and it's steep enough to feel like you've earned something.

What you get at the top is genuine perspective. No tarmac, no visitor centre, no crowds. Just moorland, rough grass, and the kind of view that makes you realise how small you are in these Southern Uplands. On a clear day you can pick out the farming settlements dotted across the landscape, and there's something quite meditative about standing up there with nothing but the wind.

Walkers will find this worthwhile, especially if you're doing a Borders tour between longer expeditions. It's the sort of climb that builds appetite rather than exhaustion. Kids above ten will manage it without complaint, though younger ones might find the exposed sections a bit much.
