Vernon's Copse

The woods around Hungerford are thick with beech and oak, and Vernon's Copse is exactly the kind of patch that makes a proper forest walk rather than a park stroll. It's genuinely wild in places - the sort of spot where you'll lose phone signal and genuinely feel removed from the surrounding farmland.

There's no visitor centre or marked trails to speak of, which means you're essentially exploring on foot with whatever map sense you've got. The appeal is precisely that lack of infrastructure. You're picking your way through leaf litter, spotting what remains of old hedgerows, and if you're lucky, spotting woodland birds that actually have space to move.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination in itself - you can't spend a full day here - but it's brilliant as an hour's outing if you're based at Lorne Hill Farm (six miles away, excellent reviews). The woodland canopy is thick enough in summer that you'll have genuine shade, which matters more than people think on hot days.

Go in spring when the bluebells come through, or autumn when the canopy turns. Winter's honestly the best for spotting structure and seeing how the land sits. The ground can be boggy after rain, so waterproofs aren't optional.

Technically it's free to roam, though do respect that this is working countryside - stick to established paths where you can identify them. It's a side dish to a Hungerford weekend, not the main course.
