Verdant Works Museum

The old jute mill in Tayport tells the story of Scotland's textile industry in a way that actually matters. Verdant Works isn't one of those museums that makes you feel like you're trudging through someone else's homework - it's a proper working mill conversion where you can see the looms, smell the damp fibres, and understand why thousands of people spent their lives here. The building itself is the attraction, really. Walking through the weaving sheds where the clatter would've been deafening, you get a real sense of what the job entailed. The exhibits explain the trade routes, the working conditions, and the women who powered the industry - it's women's history that doesn't get told nearly enough. You'll spend a good two hours here if you're actually interested; an hour if you're just passing through. Free entry makes it an easy call on a Fife holiday. The nearby Tayport Links and Larick Campsite are both cracking bases within a short drive, so you could spend a morning here and be off to the coast for lunch. Best visited midweek if you want to avoid school groups. The café does decent coffee, which matters when you're learning industrial history.
