Velly Wood

The forest floor at Velly Wood is thick with moss and last season's leaves, the kind of place where you actually notice the quiet. It's a proper woodland walk just outside Bideford in North Devon, and it delivers exactly what you'd expect - dense trees, a bit of shade, and enough peace to remember why you came to Cornwall in the first place.

The woodland isn't massive, so this works well for families with younger kids or anyone who wants a straightforward walk without needing all-day provisions. You're looking at an hour to ninety minutes depending on which paths you take and whether you stop to poke about in the undergrowth like a proper explorer. The canopy is decent, which means it's usable even when the forecast is a bit grim.

Historically it's not the sort of place with plaques and information boards - just trees doing their thing. That's fine. Sometimes you just want a walk without the interpretation panels.

If you're staying at Roeys Retreat Campsite or Coastal Cabins Glamping, both within a couple of miles, this is an easy add-on to your morning before heading elsewhere. The nearby market town of Bideford has better amenities if you need tea and cake afterwards. Atlantic Horizons is a bit further out but still reasonable for a day trip. The forest doesn't require advance booking as far as I can tell - just turn up and go. Worth your time if you're in the area, but don't expect anything dramatic.
