Keivills Wood

Walk into Keivills Wood and you're immediately surrounded by towering oaks and dense undergrowth that feels properly remote, despite being just outside Bideford. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no themed attractions, no gift shops, just woodland doing what woodland does best.

The forest is excellent for a proper ramble. Paths wind through the trees, some well-trodden and obvious, others a bit more adventurous if you fancy getting off the main routes. You'll spot the occasional clearing and if you're lucky, some wildlife activity - nothing exotic, but the everyday stuff that makes a forest feel alive. It's the kind of walk where you can spend anywhere from an hour to a whole afternoon depending on how much wandering you want to do.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that these woodlands have been here for centuries, though there's little formal interpretation on site. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull if they're expecting interactive elements - it's genuinely just trees and paths. Teenagers who enjoy hiking or photography will get more from it.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Roeys Retreat or Broad Park, Keivills makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion without needing to drive far. Go in autumn when the canopy colours properly, or spring when the woodland floor comes alive. Summer can feel a bit dense and damp in there.
