The Wye Valley sprawls across this corner of Herefordshire in a way that makes you forget you're anywhere near England proper. Vauxhall Fields is a nature reserve that catches most people off guard - it's not the sort of place you stumble upon by accident, which is rather the point. The reserve spans riverside meadows where the Wye does its thing, and the walking is straightforward enough that you won't need a map the size of Wales.

What you're actually there for is the birds. Winter brings redwings and fieldfares in decent numbers, and if you time it right - say, early morning in spring - you'll catch migrants properly. The meadows flood seasonally, which sounds inconvenient until you realise it's what makes the whole place work ecologically. Walkers find it rewarding without being strenuous; you can knock out an hour here or spend half a day if you're patient with binoculars.

Coleford sits roughly three miles away if you need supplies or a proper lunch. The campsite situation nearby is genuinely first-rate - Doward Park and Bracelands both rate five stars and sit within spitting distance, so if you're basing yourself in the Wye Valley for a week, Vauxhall Fields slots in nicely alongside the gorge walks and the canoe routes.
