Vane Hill

The walk up Vane Hill is short, sharp, and exactly what you want from a Perthshire afternoon if you've got a couple of hours spare near Kinross. It's not a sprawling mountain odyssey - more a proper little hill that rewards you with views across the Ochil range and down towards the Forth Valley if the weather plays ball.

The ascent itself is straightforward enough, though the path gets a bit rough underfoot in places. You're looking at around 45 minutes to the top without mucking about, which makes it ideal if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Wild Goose Glamping and fancy something more vigorous than a stroll but less demanding than a full day's expedition. The views aren't dramatic in a jaw-dropping sense, but they're pleasant - rolling countryside rather than alpine theatre.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the sort of hike that lets you think, or chat to whoever you're with, rather than demanding total concentration on technical terrain. Kids aged eight upwards would manage it without complaint, though younger ones might find the final push tedious. It's free to walk, naturally - just turn up.

Timing matters here. Go early if you're visiting in summer, as the path can get boggy after rain. Spring and autumn are probably your sweet spot.
