Valebridge Pond

Valebridge Pond sits just outside Hassocks, a modest stretch of water that punches above its weight if you know what you're after. It's the sort of place locals have been coming to for years - nothing flashy, just honest woodland and water. The pond itself is ringed with trees, which means you get proper shade even on scorching days, and there's enough of a path to walk the perimeter without scrambling through undergrowth.

Birdwatchers will genuinely get something out of this. Bring binoculars and you'll spot waterfowl throughout the year, and the quieter sections attract herons if you're patient. It's also decent for a short family walk - nothing strenuous, manageable in 45 minutes if you're not lingering. The water's too murky for swimming, and there's no café or facilities as far as I can tell, so come prepared.

What makes it work for a park holiday is proximity to Wild Boar Wood Campsite and Blacklands Farm, both within easy reach. After a morning at either site, this is the sort of place you'd slip away to mid-afternoon when energy flags. You won't spend hours here, but you'll be glad you came. It's the kind of spot that grows on you - less about Instagram moments, more about actually being outside without crowds.
