V&A Dundee

The V&A Dundee sits right on the waterfront, impossible to miss with its angular, boat-like silhouette that looks like it's about to sail off into the Tay. This is the Scottish outpost of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and it's genuinely worth the drive from Tayport if you're staying at either Tayport Links or Larick Campsite - just a fifteen-minute hop from either spot.

Inside, you're looking at design and decorative arts across three floors, with rotating exhibitions that actually change regularly enough to warrant a repeat visit. The permanent collection ranges from fashion and furniture to ceramics and jewellery. What sets it apart is how accessible it all feels - not stuffy or overwhelming, just well-curated rooms where you can actually breathe and think. The waterfront views from the upper floors are proper lovely, especially on a clear day when you can see right across the estuary.

Family groups will find it manageable; there's enough visual interest to keep kids engaged for a good two to three hours without feeling like a slog. The design focus means it appeals to older children particularly well. Adults who care about typography, craftsmanship, or social history will lose track of time entirely.

Admission costs aren't steep, and most of the year it's nowhere near as rammed as its London counterpart. Early autumn is quiet and splendid. Skip the summer holidays unless you don't mind queues. Pair it with a walk along the Dundee waterfront afterwards - the combination makes for a proper day out if you're basing yourself at the caravan parks.
