USAAF Liberator Memorial Site

A B-24 Liberator crashed on the moorland above Gairloch in 1944, and the memorial marks where ten American airmen lost their lives. It's a sobering spot - nothing flashy, just a simple monument set into the Highland landscape with views stretching toward the coast.

Walking up here takes proper effort. The terrain is boggy and exposed, and you're climbing to around 1,500 feet across open moor. On a clear day it's magnificent; on a grey one it feels appropriately reverent. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip from the nearest parking, depending on fitness and weather.

This isn't a place for young children or anyone unwilling to hike. But if you're history-minded or have an interest in World War Two aviation, the personal story here - ten men, one moment - hits differently than museum displays. The Americans stationed in Britain during the war are often forgotten; this keeps their memory alive.

Gairloch itself is small but serviceable, and Sands Caravan & Camping sits just five miles south if you're basing yourself here. The Highland scenery around Loch Gairloch is proper wild, and pairing this memorial with walks across the moorland makes sense if you've got a few days. Go on a settled day if you can - the exposure means poor visibility defeats the purpose.
