Upton Court Park

The Thames Valley's wetlands come alive at Upton Court Park, a proper working nature reserve just outside Windsor where you can actually see what conservation looks like rather than just read about it. The place sprawls across meadows and reedbeds - it's genuinely wild in places, with boardwalks threading through the marshy bits so you don't end up mud-caked to the knees. Breeding birds are the main draw here. Spring and early summer reward patient observers with warblers, bitterns if you're lucky, and lapwings that'll kick up a fuss if you get too close to their nests. You'll see water voles too, darting between the reeds.

It's the sort of spot that rewards dawdling. Bring binoculars and a bird book - families with kids old enough to sit still for more than five minutes will get something out of it, though under-tens might find it a bit slow unless they're already into wildlife. The walking's gentle, mostly flat, and takes two to three hours if you do the full circuit. Go early in the day when the birds are active and the light's better for spotting.

Staying nearby at Queens Acre or Amerden means you can slip over here as part of a Windsor-area break without too much faffing about. It's free, which is worth knowing, and the reserve runs on donations and volunteers. Check their website for opening times and seasonal closures during breeding season - they sometimes restrict access to protect nesting birds.
