Henry Moore's bronze sits in the middle of a Hertfordshire field like it owns the place, which technically it does. Upright Motive No.5 is a proper sculpture - all twisted organic forms and monumental scale - installed permanently at Hatfield House, just east of Ware. You don't need to pay to see it; it's outdoors and accessible to anyone willing to walk the grounds.

Moore's work from the 1950s doesn't announce itself loudly. The motive of the title is philosophical rather than literal, and the sculpture reveals different moods depending on where you stand around it. In low light it's almost threatening. On a bright day it's strangely graceful. If you're into modern art and sculpture, it's worth the trip. If abstract bronze isn't your thing, don't pretend it will suddenly make sense - you'll be standing there trying to work out what it means while your partner checks their phone.

The walk through the estate grounds is pleasant enough, and you can combine a visit with exploring Hatfield House itself if history appeals. Timing-wise, allow an hour for the sculpture and grounds. Spring and autumn light is better than summer heat bouncing off the metal.

Staying nearby, Toad Abode is barely over a mile away and gets consistently strong reviews - perfect base for a weekend if you're making a proper trip of it rather than just a quick detour. The Wild Retreat at Redricks Lake offers a different pace if you want something more rural-feeling. Both work well for combining with other Hertfordshire attractions.
