There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no cafe, no gift shop, no queues - just you, the water, and whatever birds have decided to settle that day. The banks are accessible from certain points, and the surrounding moorland gives you decent views across the valley if you're willing to stretch your legs for twenty minutes or so. It's the kind of place walkers pass through rather than plan a whole trip around, but that's rather the point. The reservoir does its job, and you get to benefit from the peace. Northern Ireland Water manages it, and there's a general permission to explore the immediate surrounds, though it's worth respecting the boundaries - this isn't a recreation ground. Allow an hour for a gentle circuit if the access is open. Bring decent boots; it gets muddy. For families, it's a bit underwhelming unless the kids are genuinely keen on nature spotting. But if you're camping at Down to Earth Wild Camping just five miles down the road and want a morning walk without driving anywhere, it's well worth the short hop. The real appeal is the lack of fuss - you won't find postcard views, but you will find space.
