Slievetrue

The walk up Slievetrue is a proper leg-burner, but you get your reward at the top. It's a straightforward peak near Larne, nothing fancy, but the views across Mid and East Antrim make the climb worthwhile. On a clear day you can see right across the landscape - industrial patches mixed with farmland and the occasional glimpse toward the coast. The path isn't technical, just steep enough to test your calves. Walkers will get the most from this one. You're looking at a couple of hours up and down, depending on fitness, so bring water and wear decent shoes. It's free, obviously - just turn up and go. Winter can make it boggy, so autumn's your best bet. Summer crowds are minimal, which is refreshing. This isn't a tourist attraction with facilities or a visitor centre - there's no café at the top, no gift shop. It's just you, the wind, and the view. If you're camping at Down to Earth Wild Camping just down the road, Slievetrue makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion. The nearby countryside is generally quiet and worth poking around. Not a destination in itself, but a decent waypoint if you're already in the area exploring Larne and the surrounding peaks. The real appeal is solitude and genuine hiking, not Instagram moments.
