Upper Perlieu Wood

Walking into Upper Perlieu Wood feels like stepping into someone's private estate - all towering oaks and dappled light, with barely another soul around. It's proper woodland, the kind where you can actually hear yourself think, just a few miles north of Ross-on-Wye on the edge of the Forest of Dean.

The paths wind through dense tree cover without much fanfare. You're not getting dramatic viewpoints or manicured trails here; this is genuine forest floor stuff. Walkers will find it genuinely rewarding - there's enough ground to cover for a proper outing, and the woodland floor is soft underfoot. Children might enjoy it for an hour or two, but it's not the sort of place with waymarked adventure courses or obvious focal points.

Historically interesting if you're into woodland ecology and land use, though there's limited interpretation on site. The appeal is straightforward: quiet, undeveloped woodland in a region otherwise quite busy with tourism.

If you're camping at Doward Park or Bracelands, both nearby with excellent ratings, Upper Perlieu Wood makes a solid morning walk without needing to travel far. Broadmeadow is also within easy reach. There's no information on facilities or formal opening, so treat it as self-guided exploration - best in dry conditions when the ground isn't boggy. Allow two to three hours if you want to properly explore rather than just pass through. Go if you want solitude and genuine woodland; skip it if you need infrastructure or structured activity.
