Families with young kids will find it manageable, though don't expect playground equipment or picnic areas. The paths are reasonably clear, but bring decent footwear - woodland mud is real mud. Allow 60-90 minutes depending on how far you fancy going. There's no charge, no gates, no nonsense. It's the kind of place you visit because you're staying nearby, not because it's a destination in its own right. That's fine. It slots perfectly into a wider Forest of Dean holiday where you're already moving between campsites and nature reserves. Ross-on-Wye itself is close enough for provisions. Go on a weekday morning if you can - weekends bring more foot traffic. If you're after dramatic vistas or heritage trails, look elsewhere. If you want genuine woodland to clear your head before heading back to the caravan, Hom Wood does the job without fuss.
