Upper Furnace Pool

The water here is still and dark, reflecting the industrial heritage that made this corner of Shropshire what it is. Upper Furnace Pool is a flooded former ironworks - one of several pools dotting the landscape around Coalbrookdale, each telling a story of the region's heyday in iron production. You can walk round it easily enough, following the water's edge where willows dip low and the air feels properly industrial-heritage in the best sense. It's free to visit, and there's no faffing about with opening times or tickets.

This isn't a manicured lake with tea rooms and deck chairs. It's a genuine working bit of Shropshire's past, quiet and contemplative. The walk takes twenty minutes or so depending on the path conditions - the ground can be boggy after rain. Families with older kids will find it interesting, particularly if they've got even a passing interest in industry or engineering. Walkers doing the longer Ironbridge Gorge circuit will pass this way naturally. If you're staying at Irongorge Camping just up the road, it's practically on your doorstep.

The real magic happens when you realise what you're looking at - that pool existed because someone needed water to power furnaces centuries ago. Now it's just water and sky and the occasional heron. Worth a proper walk if you're already exploring the Coalbrookdale area, but don't make a special trip if you're short on time. It slots well into a broader park holiday taking in the gorge itself and the museums dotted about.
