Up North Framing

Up North Framing sits just outside Stanley, a proper working gallery that takes itself seriously without the pretension. It's a framing shop first, gallery second - the kind of place where the owner actually knows what they're talking about and won't try to sell you something you don't need.

What you get is local art on the walls, regional artists featured regularly, and the chance to watch frames being made if you time it right. The work tends toward contemporary stuff and photography - nothing too experimental, but genuinely worth stopping for if you're into that sort of thing. The space is modest, so it won't eat up your afternoon, but that's partly the appeal. You're in and out in twenty minutes, or you linger over a piece for an hour. Your call.

It's not a destination in itself, to be honest. But if you're based at Beamish Holiday Park nearby and fancy a gentle morning wandering Stanley's back streets, this breaks up the walk nicely. The area's got some proper character - old industrial heritage lurking about - so combining a frame gallery visit with a coffee somewhere in town works well enough. Free entry presumably, though it's worth ringing ahead to check opening hours, as smaller galleries can be a bit temperamental with their schedules.

Family-friendly but only if your kids actually care about art. Walkers would appreciate the location more than the gallery itself.
