Unstone Boatyard Spiral

A spiralling ramp descends into what was once an industrial boatyard near Dronfield - now an unexpected art space carved into the landscape itself. The Unstone Boatyard Spiral is genuinely odd in the best way: a working gallery set within the bones of Derbyshire's canal heritage, where contemporary art sits alongside the physical remains of where narrowboats were built and repaired. You walk down the helical path and find yourself surrounded by red brick, water channels, and installations that make proper use of the setting rather than fighting it.

It's not a quick visit. Spend a good hour here, longer if you're into industrial archaeology or contemporary work. The spiral itself becomes part of the exhibition - your route through the space is the art. History enthusiasts will appreciate the boatyard's past; artists and designers will get the conceptual approach; families with older kids won't find it boring, though very young ones might struggle with the walk back up.

Admission details aren't firmly fixed, so phone ahead before you go - opening hours vary seasonally. If you're based at Riverside Valley Camping just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day excursion without driving far. It's the sort of place that sticks with you precisely because it refuses to be polished or prettified. Dronfield itself is close enough for supplies, but the boatyard is the real reason to come.
