Ulley Country Park

The reservoir itself is the star here - a proper slice of water surrounded by woodland that gives Sheffield a surprisingly rural feel once you're away from the city edges. Ulley sits just south of the city, near Rotherham, and it's the kind of place where you can actually forget you're minutes from urban sprawl.

You're looking at a circular walk around the water - nothing too demanding, which is precisely why families with younger kids and casual walkers get the most from it. The path is well-maintained, and there are decent spots to stop and watch for waterfowl. Birdwatchers take it seriously here; bring binoculars and a field guide if that's your thing. The woodland gives good cover in summer, proper useful if you're visiting during warmer months.

Allow a couple of hours for a leisurely loop. It's not a half-day commitment, more something to fit around other activities. The free access is a definite bonus - no car park fees or entrance charges to grumble about.

If you're based at Waleswood Caravan & Camping Park just down the road, Ulley makes an easy morning outing before heading to Rother Valley Country Park for something more structured. Both reservoirs have their charm, but Ulley's the quieter option. Worth the drive? Yes, but only if you're already in the area. Don't make a special trip unless you're genuinely keen on woodland walks and bird spotting.
