Uamh Bheag

The walk up Uamh Bheag from Callander is one of those Scottish outings that looks modest on the map but rewards you properly once you're up there. It's not a major peak - nothing that'll take your breath away with the climb alone - but the views back towards Stirling and across the Lowlands are genuinely worth the effort.

You'll find the path starts from near Callander and winds upward through woodland before opening out onto moorland. Allow a good two to three hours for the round trip if you're not rushing. The terrain's straightforward enough for most walkers, though it can be boggy in places so decent boots matter. There's something quite satisfying about a Scottish hill that doesn't demand scrambling or proper mountaineering skills but still feels like a proper outing.

Families with older kids will get on fine here. Younger children might find it a bit of a slog unless they're keen walkers already. On clear days the visibility is excellent - you'll see why this stretch of the Lowlands was worth fighting over. On grey days it's atmospheric in that moody Scottish way, but the views won't be there to reward you.

If you're staying at Keltie Bridge or Callander Woods Holiday Park, this makes a cracking half-day excursion. It's the sort of walk that fits well between lazy mornings and evening pub sessions rather than dominating your day. No facilities on the mountain itself, so bring water and something to eat.
