Loch Mahaick

The water here is dark and still, ringed by moorland that rolls back towards the Trossachs. Loch Mahaick sits quietly a few miles north of Callander, the sort of place you'd drive past without noticing unless someone pointed you towards it. It's a proper working landscape - not Instagram gold, just a Scottish loch doing what Scottish lochs do.

There's a decent walk around the perimeter if you're after a stretch of the legs, though the banks are boggy in places and the terrain's uneven enough to keep you concentrating. Walkers get the most from this one. The view opens up nicely from the north side, and on a clear day you can pick out the higher peaks beyond. In winter it takes on a bleak quality that's oddly compelling.

It's free to access and you can turn up whenever suits - there's no gatekeeper or entrance fee. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the full circuit, less if you just want a quick look from the road. Come in autumn when the crowds thin out and the light gets lower and goldener.

If you're staying at Keltie Bridge or Callander Woods - both just down the road - this works as a half-morning diversion before heading into town for lunch. The caravan parks put you within striking distance of the Trossachs proper, so Loch Mahaick fills a gap on days when you want something quieter than Loch Katrine. It won't wow you, but it's a genuine slice of the Lowlands without the circus.
