Tynron Doon

The earthworks at Tynron Doon rise abruptly from the landscape near Thornhill, a modest hill fort that's been here since Iron Age times. What you're looking at is a double-ringed fortification - two concentric banks and ditches that once enclosed a settlement, though honestly the ramparts have flattened considerably over two thousand years. The walk up takes ten minutes from the road, and the views across Dumfries and Galloway open out nicely from the top.

This is the sort of place that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers more than casual family trippers. Kids might find it underwhelming after the initial scramble - there are no reconstructions, no visitor centre, just the land itself and what your imagination makes of it. That's actually its charm. You're standing where people stood, where they built defences, where life happened. No interpretation boards needed.

Access is free and unrestricted, though checking local conditions beforehand is sensible - the ground can be boggy. Allow an hour if you're thorough, half that if you just want the views. The site sits well within reach of Penpont Holiday Park, barely two miles away, making it an easy morning outing between other activities in the region. Red Squirrel Campsite sits further off but perfectly manageable for a day trip. Best visited outside the wettest months when the earthworks aren't completely sodden. It's proper old Scotland, unadorned and real.
