Capenoch Loch

The water at Capenoch Loch sits dark and still, reflecting the low hills around Thornhill like a proper mirror on a calm day. It's a straightforward spot - a loch you can walk around, fish if you've got a rod, or simply sit by and watch the light change across the water. Nothing flashy, nothing trying too hard.

This is walker territory, mainly. The loch works best for people after a proper ramble rather than those wanting to tick something off in twenty minutes. You can loop the shoreline without too much scrambling, and the views back towards the Southern Uplands are genuine. On a grey Scottish morning - which is most mornings - the place has real character.

Families with restless kids might find it a touch underwhelming unless there's water activity involved. But if you've got older children who'll actually enjoy a walk without complaining, they'll be fine here. Fishermen come for the trout, and they tend to know what they're doing.

Staying at Penpont Holiday Park, just a mile and a half away, gives you easy access without making it a pilgrimage. Red Squirrel Campsite and The Outdoor Hotel are slightly further out but both solid bases for exploring the Dumfries and Galloway region. Capenoch works as part of a bigger walking day rather than a destination in itself - pair it with exploring Thornhill's decent local pubs and you've got a proper afternoon sorted.
