Twelve Acre Wood

A proper woodland walk through Sussex farmland, Twelve Acre Wood is exactly what it says on the tin - twelve acres of mixed trees and undergrowth just outside Tenterden. This isn't a manicured country estate; it's the real thing. You get winding paths that feel properly remote despite being minutes from civilization, with oak and beech doing their job of blocking out the sky and making you forget there's a town five minutes away.

Walkers will love this. It's the sort of place to spend a solid hour, maybe ninety minutes if you meander. The paths vary - some tight and rooty, others more open - so you won't be bored trudging the same route twice. Spring's genuinely magical here if you catch the bluebells. Autumn's also decent, though by November it gets a bit muddy and loses its charm. Take decent boots either way.

Kids will find enough to keep them occupied for an afternoon - fallen logs to clamber on, streams to mess about with, the general freedom of actual woodland rather than a manicured park. It's not a destination by itself, but it pairs brilliantly with a glamping stay at Wheatfields, just a mile and a half away. You could easily combine it with a trip to Rye Harbour Holiday Park further afield if you're making a proper weekend of it in the area.

Free to access. No facilities on site, so bring water and don't expect toilets. Early mornings are quietest.
