Tweazle Wood

Tweazle Wood sits just outside Heathfield in East Sussex, a proper working forest that feels genuinely off the beaten track. This isn't a manicured country estate with visitor centres and car parks - it's the real deal, a stretch of ancient woodland where you can actually walk without bumping into tour groups.

What you get is straightforward: footpaths threading through mixed broadleaf and conifer forest, decent wildlife spotting if you're patient, and the kind of peace that makes you remember why people bother with countryside holidays. The woodland floor changes with the seasons - bluebells in spring, decent autumn colour, and year-round moss and fern cover that keeps things feeling alive.

Don't expect facilities. There's no cafe, no designated trails with painted waymarks, no information boards. That's partly the appeal. Families with younger kids might find it a bit shapeless after half an hour unless they're genuinely into splashing through streams and turning over logs for insects. Serious walkers and bird watchers will appreciate the quiet.
