Tuttonhill Wood

A proper Suffolk woodland that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. Tuttonhill Wood is straightforward - dense trees, well-maintained paths, and the kind of quiet you actually can't get near Ipswich. It's the sort of place where you'll hear birds rather than traffic, which alone makes the short drive east from town worthwhile.

Walkers will get the most from it. The woodland isn't vast, so you're looking at maybe an hour for a decent loop, but the paths are clear enough and there's genuine peace here. Families with young kids will manage fine if they're happy on leaf-covered trails - it's not a playground, but that's rather the point. Bring proper shoes though; Suffolk clay clings to trainers something fierce after rain.

It's free to access and there's no faffing about with opening times - the sort of place you just turn up to. Not particularly dramatic, and there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. The beauty is exactly that lack of infrastructure. It feels like somewhere locals actually use rather than somewhere designed for tourists.

If you're based at Wheathill or The Lost Garden Retreat nearby, this makes a solid morning walk without eating into a full day. You won't be blown away, but you'll leave feeling like you've actually been somewhere rather than ticked a box. That's increasingly rare.
