Devil's Grove

This Suffolk woodland east of Ipswich is properly wild, all gnarled oaks and tangled undergrowth that feels genuinely untamed. The trees are ancient and thick enough to block most of the sky, which means it's dark in there even on bright days. You won't find manicured paths or visitor facilities. What you get instead is a proper walk through something that feels genuinely old.

It's the kind of place walkers and nature types will genuinely enjoy - the sort who don't need a café or gift shop to feel like they've had a day out. Kids might find it spooky rather than fun, though older ones who like exploring will be absorbed. The forest rewards a proper wander rather than a quick twenty-minute circuit. Allow at least an hour, longer if you're the type to stop and listen.

Practically speaking, admission appears to be free, though facilities are minimal. Wear decent boots - the ground stays boggy. Best visited in drier months when the paths aren't waterlogged, though autumn is genuinely lovely here when the light filters through the canopy.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Wheathill or Stonham Barns are closest - this makes a solid half-day excursion. It's close enough to Ipswich to slot into a broader East Anglia trip without losing a full day to travel. Proper woodland, real atmosphere, no crowds. That's the appeal.
