Derby's contemporary art space, Turtle, occupies a converted warehouse in the city centre - all exposed brick, high ceilings, and the kind of stripped-back industrial feel that makes you feel clever just walking in. The gallery rotates exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing emerging artists and established names across painting, sculpture, installation, and photography. There's usually something interesting on, whether that's abstract work that makes you squint or something more accessible that actually speaks to you.

It's the sort of place where you'll spend anything from thirty minutes to two hours depending on what's hanging and whether you fancy a proper look. Artists and creative types will get the most from it, but honestly, if you're staying in the area and fancy something indoors on a grey Midlands afternoon, it beats browsing high street shops. The space itself is worth seeing even if the current show isn't knocking your socks off.

If you're based at Hill Farm Camping & Caravan Park, it's only a fifteen-minute drive into Derby proper, making it a decent rainy-day option when the kids need something other than more muddy field time.
