Turpin Hill

The walk up Turpin Hill from Keswick is straightforward enough - a proper fell rather than a mountain, which means it won't take all day but still rewards you with views across the Lake District. The route's popular with families and casual walkers because it's manageable without being a slog, though the final push does get a bit steep for what is essentially a modest peak.

On a clear day you get decent views back towards Skiddaw and across the northern lakes. The fell itself is open moorland with patches of gorse, so there's nowhere to hide from the weather if it turns, but that's half the charm of fell walking round here. Allow a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace and how long you faff about at the top.

It works well as part of a wider Keswick-based holiday - the town's got everything you need for a fell break, and there are plenty of campsites within striking distance if you're staying locally. Kestrel Lodge is closest at under three miles, while Skiddaw View further out gives you the proper outdoor experience. The walk pairs nicely with other local peaks if you're the type to bag several in a weekend, though Turpin Hill stands alone perfectly well as a half-day outing.

Worth it? If you're already in Keswick and fancy a bit of fresh air with views, yes. If you're specifically travelling miles to climb this particular fell, there are bigger returns on the effort elsewhere in the Lake District.
