Turner's House (Sandycombe Lodge)

The yellow stucco cottage sitting quietly on a leafy lane outside Chessington is where J.M.W. Turner, one of Britain's most celebrated landscape painters, actually lived and worked. It's a proper slice of the man himself - modest, thoughtful, and packed with detail if you know where to look.

Turner built Sandycombe Lodge in 1813 as a retreat from London life, and you can still feel that intention in the place. The house itself is small, almost unexpectedly so given his fame. You move through rooms where he sketched and painted, see the gallery space he created, and get a genuine sense of how he lived rather than some sanitised museum version. The garden has been restored to something close to what he'd have known, and there's a tranquility to it that makes you understand why he came here.
