Turkeytarn Hill

The climb up Turkeytarn Hill rewards you with views across the Eden Valley that'll make your legs forget they're knackered. It's a proper fell walk rather than a stroll - steep in places, moorland underfoot - but nothing that'll have you scrambling for ropes. The summit sits at a decent height to give real perspective on the surrounding fells and farmland, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District peaks.From Appleby-in-Westmorland it's only a short drive to get to the trailhead, which makes it ideal for a half-day outing if you're staying at Wild Rose Holiday Park or anywhere else in the area. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.Families with older kids will manage fine here - it's not technical, just steady uphill work. Younger ones might find it a slog. Serious walkers will find it more of a warm-up than a challenge, but the views make it worthwhile regardless. The moorland terrain means you're exposed to weather, so pick your day carefully. Wind up here can be fierce, and in cloud it's less inspiring than it sounds.It's the sort of walk that slots nicely into a broader Pennine itinerary - plenty of other hills and dales within easy reach if you're making a holiday of it. No facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat.
