Turf Hill

The walk up Turf Hill is deceptively modest - it doesn't look like much from the car park, just a gentle slope through Bracknell Forest with the occasional dog walker and the odd family with young kids in tow. But that's rather the point. This isn't some dramatic crag that'll have you breathless and dizzy; it's a proper local hill that rewards you with decent views across the sandstone ridges of the forest, especially if you time it right on a clear afternoon.

Getting there takes maybe twenty minutes on foot from the base, and the paths are well-maintained enough that you won't need serious boots. The summit itself is a bit underwhelming if you're expecting a cairn or a view indicator - it's essentially a high point in the trees - but the forest floor around it is genuinely pleasant, with that particular heathland quality that makes you feel like you've wandered properly away from Surrey commuter-belt life.

It's best suited to families with older kids who don't mind a gentle ramble, or anyone after a straightforward walk without the scramble. Give it an hour to ninety minutes all in. Warfield Park, just five or so miles away, makes a natural pairing if you're based in the area for a longer holiday - you could easily do both in a day trip without feeling rushed. Come when the light's soft and the forest floor isn't waterlogged, and you'll understand why locals keep coming back.
